About the project

The idea for the playground was developed in collaboration with the housing ‘Kongevænget’ in Hillerød and MONSTRUM. Henrik Jørgensen Landscape was responsible for the general renovation of all common areas in the housing complex.

The target group was children from five to 14 years. MONSTRUM designed a playground with a giant spider on its way across the forest floor.

The Giant Spider and the Mushrooms

The spider is enormous: 6.5 meters x 10.5 meters and 4.8 meters tall at the top of its back.

The interior is outfitted by warm LED light, spreading a warm glow at night. The eight eyes on the spider’s head are equipped with LED spotlights, lighting up the area in front of the spider.

You can climb into the body of the spider and get the feeling of being in a tree house. Between the legs the spider has spun a web, that allows you to climb from leg to leg using steel bars for arm travelling.

A fireman pole brings you to the ground from the rear of the spider’s body, and next to the spider you encounter three big mushrooms, one of them featuring a long slide.

Behind the spider, there is a forest of large straws of grass made of Rubinia trunks. The straws are painted in two shades of green to give the impression of movement. The ropes between the trunks offer exciting climbing possibilities, and a long ropeway takes you far away across the lawn.

Boarding and floors consist of 28 mm larch planks. The legs on the spider are made of 50 mm x 200 mm larch wood. All stems are Robinia trunks. The slide is made of 40 mm birch ply with stainless steel. The playground is painted with water-based wood protection. All rope used is 18 mm typhoon rope with steel plies.
